grateful vs. thankful: What鈥檚 the difference?

Grateful and thankful are close synonyms that are almost always used to mean the same thing. Both can mean 鈥渇eeling gratitude鈥 (as in I鈥檓 so grateful/thankful for the opportunity) or 鈥渆xpressing gratitude鈥 (as in Their letter was extremely grateful/thankful). Both words can be used even when there鈥檚 not actually anyone to thank. Grateful also has a much rarer sense, meaning 鈥減leasing to the mind or senses.鈥
