As a newly minted professor, Breslow also made fundamental contributions in a completely different area of chemistry: a newly explored type of chemical bonding called aromaticity.

“From a theoretical viewpoint,” the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences declared in awarding the Nobel, “the discovery of the fullerenes has influenced our conception of such widely separated scientific problems as the galactic carbon cycle and classical aromaticity, a keystone of theoretical chemistry.”

There are several concepts in chemistry – aromaticity, hydrophobic effects, polarizability, chemical diversity – which succumb to multiple definitions and are not strictly quantifiable.
