On a trip to the United States, Mr. Bartholdi chose what was then Bedloe’s Island — it was renamed Liberty Island in 1956 — because of its visibility to ships entering New York Harbor.

In 1885, the torch was transported in crates by ship from France to what was then a military base known as Bedloe’s Island.

In 1884, the cornerstone for the Statue of Liberty’s pedestal was laid on Bedloe’s Island in New York Harbor.

The island’s name was changed from Bedloe’s Island to Liberty Island in 1956.

It is impossible to know what the passengers on the Eider thought of the giant pedestal on Bedloe’s Island, as the ship steamed toward Castle Garden in October, 1885.
