After reading Tallamy’s work, local gardener Caroline Boatsman shifted her thinking and now aspires to becoming a “caterpillar farmer.”

Boatsman says, “I’m glad when I see holes in the leaves of my native plants.”

Cherry had lived in Aspen for about ten years, alternately waitressing at the Weinerstube Restaurant, skiing and traveling the globe, climbing mountains, hiking in Nepal, rafting down the Omo River in Africa, working as a boatsman on the wooden boats down in the Grand Canyon.

Carolyn Boatsman, one resident pushing for the changes, said she was glad the house sizes were reduced but did not think the council went far enough, particularly on height limits, to protect neighborhoods.

“People aren’t looking for no change, but we’re saying the scale of it is off the charts,” Boatsman said.
