- An index of the relative price movement of the shares of thirty major industrial companies, most of which are traded on the New York Stock Exchange . Changes in the average (noted as 鈥渞ises鈥 and 鈥渇alls鈥) give investors a general picture of the state of the market. Often referred to as 鈥渢he Dow.鈥
