O’Connell became an auxiliary bishop and episcopal vicar for the archdiocese’s San Gabriel region in 2015.

He had been an “episcopal vicar,” which under church law is an ordained priest whose main task is to help the bishop govern a part of his diocese, including with authority over priests.

“The cathedral stands as a physical sign of unity of the 62 parishes in the Diocese of Orange,” the Rev. Christopher Smith, rector and episcopal vicar of the church, told the Los Angeles Times.

During the course of more than a decade as pastor of a Texas church, the priest, Manuel La Rosa-Lopez, was also appointed by Cardinal DiNardo to a leadership role in the archdiocese as episcopal vicar for Hispanics.

He is also the archdiocese’s episcopal vicar for Hispanics.
