Tom Glassie, longtime owner of the Avalon Hotel, has been meeting with city officials and residents for the past two years, wrestling with “what do we want to be when we grow up.”

After working as a trial lawyer in the Justice Department’s civil division, he rose to partner in the Washington law firm of Glassie, Pewett, Dudley, Beebe and Shanks, which specialized in real estate law.

“My education doesn’t matter if I have no future or if I have no land,” Elizabeth Glassie, a protestor in Auckland, told Radio New Zealand.
