It was this one thought that made Harmanpreet Singh leave his family bakery to open a specialty coffee shop in the northern Indian city of Jalandhar.

Three months later, Mr Singh put his learnings to test and opened Buland Café in Jalandhar.

Now 44, he was a young boy growing up in the Punjabi city of Jalandhar during a peak of strife between Sikhs and the Indian government.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar was born in the district of Jalandhar in the north Indian state of Punjab.

He was born in Bharsinghpur village in Punjab's Jalandhar, and moved to Canada in 1997.
