Elsewhere in Ukraine, the mayor of Kharkiv said a drone had struck a petrol station in the city centre, and explosions were also heard in the city of Sumy.

Blasts were also reported in the north-eastern city of Kharkiv, which also came under attack.

In Kharkiv in the north-east, more than 100 people were injured and one person was killed after three struck a residential part of the city.

Zelensky said "the main objective" was to protect Ukraine's Sumy and Kharkiv border regions, and to "ease the pressure" on other parts of the vast front line, particularly in the eastern Donetsk region.

Earlier on Friday, Russian drone strikes on the north-eastern city of Kharkiv claimed another five lives.
