Listeria contamination at a BrucePac processing plant this month and a deadly multistate outbreak linked to Boar’s Head liverwurst over the summer led to the sweeping recalls.

As a result of the multistate outbreak, which sickened dozens of people and was linked to 10 deaths, Boar’s Head permanently discontinued its liverwurst product and shut down its Jarratt, Va., facility.

Boar’s Head said an internal investigation revealed the “root cause” of the listeria contamination was a “production process that only existed at the Jarratt facility and was used only for liverwurst.”

The company updated its recall just four days later after testing confirmed that the liverwurst was contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes and indeed the source of a multistate outbreak.

The liverwurst was produced between June 11 and July 17 of this year and has a 44-day shelf life, as per the release.
