In 2022, Williams reemerged into the cultural zeitgeist on “The Crown,” portraying Camilla Parker Bowles over the final two seasons.

The series, winner of 10 Emmys out of 28 nominations so far, was set mainly from 1947 to 2005 and followed the trials and tribulations of the British royal family, led by Queen Elizabeth II. Its jam-packed closing season included the death of Princess Diana, the passing of Princess Margaret, the Queen Mother’s death at 101, the early romance between Prince William and Kate Middleton, Queen Elizabeth’s Golden Jubilee celebration and the marriage of Prince Charles to Camilla Parker Bowles.

But the public mood has softened since Charles married the woman then known as Camilla Parker Bowles in 2005.

The finale of “The Crown,” titled “Sleep, Dearie, Sleep,” features Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles’ wedding, but creator Peter Morgan says it’s a pretext for the queen wrestling with whether or not to abdicate the throne.

The ending has been in creator Peter Morgan’s mind since the beginning, although it shifted slightly after the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Producer Suzanne Mackie remembers Morgan telling her 10 years ago that he wanted to end the series in 2005, the year Charles, Prince of Wales finally married Camilla Parker Bowles.
