Several weeks ago I reached out to the Pilipino Workers Center, a Los Angeles nonprofit that has been educating domestic workers on their rights and leading a fight against a system in which labor laws are often ignored and workers — many of them old enough to be receiving elder care themselves — are cheated and exploited.

I’ve met some caregivers who, in their off time, volunteer for various organizing activities at the Pilipino Workers Center.

“It definitely shows that there is a strong progressive voice that’s coming from the Filipino community,” said Aquilina Soriano Versoza, executive director of the Pilipino Workers Center of Southern California.

“People are looking to fill shortages that they have,” said Versoza, executive director of the Pilipino Workers Center of Southern California.

“The Talang Gabay gateway is a beautiful symbol of a neighborhood that holds great significance to Filipino Americans in Los Angeles, and we are proud to have been part of the process,” Kimmy Maniquis, executive director of the nonprofit Search to Involve Pilipino Americans, said in a recent statement.
