Robie's technique is based on time-tested therapy in which patients take daily tablets of "psychic energizer" drugs known to chemists as monoamine oxidase inhibitors.

Last week the Upjohn Co. withdrew Monase. a "psychic energizer,"after reporting to FDA that widespread use since June 1961 had produced seven cases of aplastic anemia, four of them fatal�though the drug was tested in 3,500 patients, with no sign of damage to their blood-cell mechanisms, before it was marketed.

In psychiatry, Dr. Nathan S. Kline of New York's Rockland State Hospital reported, the drug is equally effective as a "psychic energizer" for long-term hospital patients and the at-large depressed whom he sees in private practice.

Emphasizing the distinction between the effects of iproniazid and previously used ataraxics, Rockland's Research Director Nathan S. Kline called it not a tranquilizer but a "psychic energizer."
