She has come far since her debut novel, the romcom Confessions of a Reluctant Recessionista, written under the pseudonym Amy Silver, hit the shelves.

Ms. Hawkins cranked out “Confessions of a Reluctant Recessionista” in about two months and published it under the pen name Amy Silver.

Nicole Lapin, founder of Recessionista a site dedicated to rethinking conventional personal finance wisdom, falls somewhere between Fuentes and Kirkpatrick.

“I really feel it is the end of an era,” said Mary Hall, who blogs about bargains at The Recessionista.

"Just because you're staying on your home turf doesn't mean you should get sucked back into business as usual," says Nicole Lapin, founder of Recessionista, an online source for financial news and advice.
