Clockshop, a nonprofit that works with artists to deepen the connection between communities and public land, has partnered with Los Angeles-based artist Rosten Woo for “What Water Wants,” a temporary art commission on the L.A.

The late author Leo Rosten gave us the perfect definition in his book “The Joys of Yiddish”: “Chutzpah is that quality enshrined in a man who, having killed his mother and father, throws himself on the mercy of the court because he is an orphan.”

Artist Adit Dhanushkodi, in collaboration with cultural organizer Rosten Woo and historian Eugene Moy, has created an installation titled “Broken News,” currently on view at Union Station, which investigates anti-Chinese sentiment in the Los Angeles press in the late 19th century.

Jesse Rosten, the director, said the idea arose when he and a friend spotted an overturned cart in a parking lot.

“Our recommendations ... flow from the recognition that so many monuments are coming down around the country for a reason, and that they represent visions of empire, state violence and white supremacy that just simply cannot hold,” said Rosten Woo, an artist and designer who co-chaired a subcommittee within the group.
