Over the last six months, Israel has scored some stunning military successes against Iranian proxies in the region, including pummeling the Lebanese Shiite Muslim group Hezbollah and killing its longtime leader, Hassan Nasrallah.

They even provided transportation for Shiites displaced from Syria’s north to return to their villages.

Syria’s territory was used as a logistical passageway for the Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah, which has been at war with Israel since October 2023.

Some, like the Alawite Shiite Muslim faction to which Assad’s family belonged, as well as some Kurds and Christians, are seen as having colluded with the regime.

Throughout the war, Israel focused its attacks on predominantly Shiite Muslim communities near Beirut, in southern Lebanon and in the eastern Bekaa Valley.
