Whiffs of formaline, chloroform, and xylol, together with the odors of occasional mislaid or neglected specimens, left no doubt as to the character of the room.

Wash successively in alcohol, xylol, ether, and alcohol, to remove the last traces of grease.

Place a drop of xylol balsam on the centre of a clean 3 by 1 glass slide and invert the cover-slip over the balsam, and lower it carefully to avoid the inclusion of air bubbles.

Wash in aniline oil, 1 part, xylol, 2 parts, until no more colour is discharged.

Treat with aniline oil and xylol, equal parts.
